Blue Frontosa

Humphead Cichlids, or Blue Frontosas, are commanding freshwater specimens originating from Lake Tanganyika's rocky depths. These fish display a sophisticated palette of pale blue to white coloring adorned with 6-7 prominent dark vertical bands, with some regional variants exhibiting deeper blue hues. Males develop a characteristic frontal hump upon maturity and display more pronounced dorsal and anal fins. Reaching lengths of 14 inches, they exhibit deliberate, composed swimming patterns unusual among cichlids. While generally docile, they establish dominance hierarchies within groups and demonstrate territorial tendencies. Optimal care demands a substantial aquarium with extensive rockwork for cave formation and refuge. They thrive on varied nutrition including quality pellets, flakes, and live foods such as krill. Compatible exclusively with similarly-sized Tanganyikan cichlids, they demonstrate predatory behavior toward smaller species. With meticulous husbandry and stable water parameters, these distinguished fish can flourish for 15-20 years.
